Propane Safety Tips Every RI & MA Homeowner Should Know

If you use propane in your Rhode Island or Massachusetts home, whether for heating, hot water, cooking, or grilling, understanding a few key safety basics can make a big difference. June is National Propane Safety Month, so it’s time to brush up on your propane safety knowledge.

1. What Does Propane Smell Like?

Propane gas in its natural state is odorless. An odorant is added to give it a distinct smell, often described as rotten eggs or a skunk’s spray. That smell is there for a reason: it’s your first warning sign that something may be wrong.

If you ever detect that odor in your home or near your propane equipment, it’s important to act quickly and follow these steps from the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC):

  • No flames or sparks. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones.
  • Get everyone out. Leave the building or the area where you suspect gas is leaking.
  • Shut off the gas. If it’s safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank by turning it to the right (clockwise).
  • Report the leak. From a safe distance, call your propane provider or 911.
  • Stay away. Do not return to the area until a qualified technician has inspected and cleared it.

These steps could protect your family and your home, so they’re worth committing to memory. For more safety resources and videos, check out the PERC video library.

2. Grilling Season and Safe Propane Transport

Summer in New England means cookouts, and cookouts mean propane grills. But before you load that tank into your car, there are a few transport safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Always keep the cylinder upright and secured during transport.
  • Never leave a propane cylinder in a hot vehicle for an extended period.
  • Make sure the valve is fully closed and, if available, use a plug or cap.
  • Keep propane grills at least five feet away from any structures.

When you need a refill, our propane refill station at 280 Franklin Street in Bristol, RI makes it easy. Stop by Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and we’ll get you filled up and back to the grill in no time.

3. Tank Connections, Installations, and Tune-Ups
