Kick off 2026 by Prioritizing Propane Safety in Your Home

The start of the new year is a natural time to reset habits and refocus on what is important. Comfort, reliability, and safety go hand in hand, making now the perfect moment to consider how propane fits into your MA or RI household and how to use it responsibly throughout the year. Keep reading to learn some basic safety information, find additional resources, and learn how Sunshine Fuels has been prioritizing propane safety since day one.

What Does Propane Smell Like?

Propane is naturally odorless; however, a strong odorant is added to make leaks easier to detect. People often compare the smell of propane to rotten eggs, skunk spray, or sulfur.

What to Do If You Smell Gas

If you believe you smell gas in or around your home, immediately follow these steps:

  1. NO FLAMES OR SPARKS. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
  2. LEAVE THE AREA. Get everyone out of the home or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
  3. SHUT OFF THE GAS. If it is safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank. To close the valve, turn it to the right or clockwise.
  4. REPORT THE LEAK. Away from the gas leak, call Sunshine Fuels right away. If you can’t reach us, call 911 or your local fire department.
  5. DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING OR AREA until Sunshine Fuels, an emergency responder, or a qualified service technician determines that it is safe to do so.
  6. GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, Sunshine Fuels or a qualified service technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.
